the jabz york story
Jabz York’s story begins in Sint Maarten, where at just four years old, he began learning steelpan from his father, Mighty Dow — continuing a musical tradition passed down from his grandfather, Chester York.
What began as a family tradition became the foundation of a lifelong relationship with music. As his talent developed, Jabz began gaining recognition on the island, winning local interscholastic talent shows in both 2012 and 2013.
From those early beginnings in Sint Maarten, Jabz’s talent quickly grew beyond the island. In 2011, his journey took him to the Netherlands, where he performed an original composition with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble at the New Year’s Concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. That same year, he also performed with Chrometone for Dutch dignitaries, marking an early milestone in an increasingly international musical journey. In 2017, Jabz returned to Amsterdam to perform an opening set for Tory Lanez.
As a teenager, that journey continued to Boston. After attending the Berklee Summer Program, Jabz auditioned for Berklee College of Music and received an international student scholarship. Boston became an important chapter in his development as an artist, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and performer.
For more than a decade, Jabz has performed with various bands and on stages throughout Boston, including the Berklee Performance Center (BPC) and the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. He has performed and collaborated with groups including Riddim Symphony and Roots Alley Collective, with whom he continues to perform to date. His work in Boston has included sold-out performances at the Berklee Performance Center, collaborations with internationally recognized artists, and a growing presence within the city’s vibrant music community.
Jabz was also selected as an A&R Selection winner, recognizing his work and potential as an emerging recording artist. As a songwriter and producer, he has written songs for international artists and continues to produce, record, and release music of his own.
But Boston became more than a place to develop his craft. It became a place to represent and contribute to Caribbean culture.
Through performances, collaborations, festivals, and community events, Jabz has helped create spaces where Caribbean music and identity can be celebrated while continuing to evolve. His work reflects a commitment to pushing the culture forward while creating new connections between Caribbean and international audiences.
His musical journey extends beyond Boston. In Sint Maarten, Jabz performs with DMF and the Hybrid Band, while also performing internationally as a solo artist. Across different settings and stages, he moves fluidly between steelpan, live instrumentation, songwriting, production, and performance — bringing the influence of his Caribbean upbringing into every chapter of his work.
In 2025, Jabz was nominated for a Boston Music Award, further recognizing his contribution to Boston’s music community and his continued growth as an artist.
From Sint Maarten to Amsterdam and Boston, each chapter has added another layer to the artist he is today.
Jabz York represents a contemporary generation of Caribbean creatives building careers across borders while remaining deeply connected to where they come from. His work carries the sounds, spirit, and cultural identity of Sint Maarten into new spaces — while creating music that speaks to audiences far beyond the Caribbean.
